Professor Kumar David, Electrical Engineer

Professor Kumar David, highly accomplished academic and electrical engineer and widely respected columnist for the newspaper Ceylon Island, passed away in Los Angeles, California, USA on Monday, October 14, 2024.  He was 83 years old.  His remains was cremated on October 18th in Los Angeles.

In Sri Lanka, he had his high school education at St. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia and completed his bachelors degree in electrical engineering at Peradeniya University with First Class Honors. He pursued his Doctorate Degree (PhD) at Imperial College of University of London, UK and also was awarded the Diploma of Imperial College (DIC).  Kumar was a senior lecturer in Electrical Engineering at Universities of Ceylon and then at Zimbabwe.  Living in Hongkong for 25 Years, Kumar held positions as the Dean of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Department Chair, and Professor and Head of the Department at Hongkong Polytechnic University.

Kumar was a frequent visitor to Sri Lanka and a trenchant writer with a mischievous sense of humor. In his last writing in the Sunday Island on October 6,  2024, he concluded saying “This piece is very short because I have suffered a back injury in a fall and am recuperating. Perhaps, I will be able to return to more productive routine some time later”.
