Mr. Nathan Sooriyakumar

Nathan Sooriyakumar

Date of Birth: 22 December 1968 - Deceased: 21 December 2021

Nathan Sooriyakumar ('Soori' as he is known to many) passwed away on the evening of 21st of December in Sydney, Australia, just a day shy of his 53rd birthday.

He leaves behind his beloved wife Rohini and beautiful teenage children Joanna and Jaunita.

He was a person who lived for others, always willing to help anyone whether he knew them or not was his character. He has done so much to the community and not many know what he has done. He was instrumental in founding SJC87 (St. Johns College) Initiative in 2009 with the sole purpose of helping the most vulnerable in our community affected by the civil war. This was started initially as a “Sponsor a Child” targeting the needy children in Jaffna who needed financial assistance to continue their studies, it then expanded to other areas. It started to provide a funding of LKR 1Million at its inception and it has now grown to provide an annual funding of  LKR 50 Million

He has also worked with Google to bring Google Education Platform to Srilankan Schools in the North, East and Upcountry. He used to spend  four weeks every year in the past few years where he worked with various Government and Non-Government organizations to organize and  conduct workshops to educate the masses about online learning and assisted them to get onto the Google Education Platform. His great relationship with Google gave access to online learning at no extra cost. After the implementation he follows up with them to ensure they are fully utilizing the resources provided.

He helped several Tamil Schools in Australia to implement Google Classroom to enable online learning at the height of COVID pandemic when in-person learning became a challenge.

He is a kind hearted person who is willing to help anyone and any time and always approachable.  We have lost a selfless person, who cared and helped the community. His legacy will live for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May his soul rest in peace

Funeral services will be held at 9 AM on 29th of December (Wednesday) at Castlebrook Memorial Park, Rouse Hill, NSW 2155.

His close friends have started a fundraising campaign to support the family with funeral expenses
