Dr. Sellappah Sivalingam, beloved husband of Bhuvaneswary, devoted father of Sivalogan(New York), Sivakumaran (New Zealand), Yoga (New Jersey), and Nanthini (New York), loving father-in-law of Ananthy(New York), Subathira (New Zealand), Ranganathan (New Jersey), and Sriskanthan (New York), and precious grandfather of Kasthuri & Luxshmi(New York), Shivan (New Zealand), Brahvan (New Jersey), Ashwin & Arjun (New York) passed away at the age of 97 years on the 4th of November 2023.
Dr. Sivalingam was the beloved son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Sellappah,
Son-in-law of the late Mr. & Mrs. Kanagasabai,
Brother of late Ratneswary Nalliah, Thanaluxhmy Kandiah and late Saravanalingam,
Brother-in-law of late Vickneswary Kanagaratnam, late Gnaneswary Kathiravetpillai, late Suguneswary Rajasundaram, late Satguru, late Gnanaguru, late Sivaguru, Ganeshaguru, late Rajeswary Thiagarajah and late Kumaraguru.
After graduating from the University of Colombo, Dr. Sivalingam taught for a short time at Colombo Holy Family Convent before joining the Ministry of Fisheries. He completed an MSc in Fisheries in the United States and then returned to Colombo. He joined the Nigerian Government as a Research Officer in 1961 and completed his PhD at the University of Colombo. He worked with the United Nations/Food and Agriculture Organization and served in Nigeria, Tunisia and Kenya until his retirement in 1986.
Dr. Sivalingam was passionate about Aquaculture/Fisheries and taught as a Visiting Lecturer at Eastern University in Batticaloa and devoted his time as an expert consultant to many private enterprises along the Chilaw & Puttalam coastline and introduced cultivation of “spirulina”, for both revenue generation and as a nutritional supplement, to the various NorthEast Tamil refugee camps in Tamil Nadu. Together in their retirement, Dr. & Mrs. Sivalingam dedicated their efforts to supporting women and children in war-affected regions in the NorthEast and close to their village of Varuthalaivilan (Tellippalai Post Office).
Dr. Sivalingam’s lifelong devotion to his family and community will be remembered by many and he will be dearly missed by his family, including his loyal and faithful dogs, Sandy & Rex.
